SUNRISE, FL – Earlier today, Florida Panthers right winger Kyle Okposo announced his retirement from the NHL after 17 seasons and 1,051 games played.
Okposo was drafted by the New York Islanders in 2006 and spent nine years with them. During his time, he made the Stanley Cup Playoffs three times.
In 2016, he signed a seven-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres, then resigned for one more year. However, he and the Sabres never found success as they missed the playoffs every year during his tenure there.
The definition of a leader.

Back in March of this year, Okposo was traded to Florida for defenseman Calle Själin as well as a seventh-round pick. He had a very quiet regular season with only six games played, but he made an impact in the Panthers’ playoff run. With 17 postseason games played, as well as two assists during the run, Okposo was noted for his strong defense and veteran leadership within the unit.
Okposo noted when he was traded to Florida that his time in the NHL was running out and made it clear that the Panthers were his preferred destination. After never experiencing the Stanley Cup Final in his long career, Florida’s championship this past season was his very first and last opportunity to skate the Cup.
“30 years of playing hockey was incredible. It brought me to some amazing places and provided such unique experiences,” said Okposo in an open letter. “I believe the game is in a great place right now, but the possibilities are vast. I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute to the game as it reaches new heights.”
In total, Okposo racked up 242 goals, 372 assists, and 614 points – with 17 points coming in the postseason. He should be in attendance when Florida lifts their championship banner on Opening Night – Saturday, October 8th at 7 pm against the Boston Bruins.
