After back-to-back overtime theatrics to start the Stanley Cup Final, Florida evens the series against Edmonton by a score of 5-4 in double overtime.
Brad Marchand is proving to be one of the greatest mid-season acquisitions in South Florida sports HISTORY. He was the star of the show tonight for the Florida Panthers, racking up a shorthanded goal and the game winner all in one night – the first player in SCF history to do that.

Sergei Bobrovsky had another special night at the net, racking up 41 saves, including six on the penalty kill. He’s now the first goaltender in SCF history to make 40+ saves in the first two games.
But overall, the Panthers did a good job limiting Edmonton’s stars and keeping up with their aggression. That was, until the third period when they took their foot off the gas on offense, turtling up and playing defense.
That bit them with seconds to go as the Oilers forced overtime with an empty net. While Florida got the game winner eventually, this has become a bad habit of being unable to close out games in the third period.
Taking A Game Up In Alberta
They say that a seven-game series doesn’t start until the road team wins. That’s good news for Florida, one of the most dominant road teams in the postseason since… the 2023 Panthers.
Edmonton did everything in its power tonight to not let Florida pull away. They had the lead multiple times today – early in the game off a wrister from Sam Bennett, and from the aforementioned shorthanded goal from Marchand. In both instances, the Oilers found a way to tie the game.
This has to be the second-biggest goal of the SCF. Florida has been glued to the penalty box this series, but Brad Marchand makes the most of a bad situation. 🏒#TimeToHuntpic.twitter.com/5aNPMnPgwR

One big reason for this is spending time in the penalty box. Florida was hit with eight penalties in this contest, but none more questionable than a goaltender interference penalty on Bennett late in the first period. The replay showed an Oiler player ever-so-slightly pushing Sam into Stuart Skinner.
The refs didn’t even call the penalty until seconds after it happened, likely from the fan’s reaction to it. Regardless, Edmonton was awarded the call and capitalized with a PPG. There were some positives, as the Cats pushed their way to being the more physical team, registering 60 hits compared to Edmonton’s 39.
While Florida evens the series, both teams will need to lick their wounds, but will get an extra day to do so. Game Three won’t be in Sunrise until Monday, June 9th at 8pm.
