It was a career day for FIU redshirt junior Owen Puk. After beginning the season in the weekend rotation, he fell out of it, but rejoined on Sunday in the series finale against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders and shut them out through five innings of work.
Puk’s eight strikeouts on Sunday marked a career-high. His five innings pitched also tied his career-high. The Panthers’ starting pitcher has now tossed 11 scoreless innings.
It wasn’t until the top of the fourth inning that the FIU offense got on the board. The Panthers’ top bat, Alex Ulloa, launched his fourth home run of the season, giving FIU a 1-0 lead.
Third baseman Javier Crespo knocked in the second run of the inning on an RBI single, putting the Panthers ahead, 2-0.
Cole Cleveland and Brylan West both went yard in this ballgame. For Cleveland, it was his third homer of the season, and for West, it was his seventh. Cole Cleveland smacked an RBI single to put the Panthers ahead, 5-3.
FIU had another three-run inning in the seventh and tacked on one more in the ninth, giving them a 10-5 win over the Blue Raiders, clinching their second straight Conference USA series win.
With the win, FIU has a 19-10 overall record and 4-2 conference record. The road trip continues on Wednesday, as the Panthers will head to Coral Gables to face the Miami Hurricanes for the second time this season.
