FIU Men’s Soccer might be on a roll, and that’s dangerous for the American. After blanking Memphis a few days ago, the Panthers earned a 2-0 shutout win over FGCU to win their second-straight match. They push their record to 3-2-2 so far as they get into the swing of things with conference play.
A little bit of rain wouldn’t deter FIU from an offensive outburst. They racked up 21 total shots with 11 shots on goal – a record for the season. This was too much for Florida Gulf Coast to handle in the eighth minute.
Taking Down Birds From Florida
Pasquale Capriatti lifted the ball inside the box in front of the net, and the ball bounced off an Eagles defender into the net. Both important and funny, the FGCU own goal gave the Panthers a lead they wouldn’t give up. The junior forward collected his third goal of the season, leading the team with nine points thus far.
That’s all the scoring in the first half, but FIU didn’t take its foot off the gas. It took some time, but they got an insurance goal in the 67th minute to essentially put this game away.
In came the freshman striker, Johan Helan, who capped off a pass from João Domingues to send in the second goal of the night for the Panthers. Helan has been effective recently, with his third goal in the last four games.

In the same span, Domingues has become the wingman for FIU, recording two assists.
This was a quiet night for goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren, and that’s a good thing. He only had to make one save on two shots on goal. It’s another clean sheet for Haveren – the fifth of his career.
Consider this win #6 in a row for FIU Men’s Soccer over FGCU. They’ll stay at Leyva Family Field for their next match against the Missouri State Bears, newly added to the American in Men’s Soccer. That’s on Sunday, September 21st at 6 pm.
