BOCA RATON, FL – Friday night baseball was interesting for FIU. After starting pitcher Logan Runde gave up a sac fly for the first run of the game, Owls starter C.J. Williams shut down the FIU lineup, but still only gave up one run off of three hits.
All in all, Florida Atlantic took down the FIU Panthers 4-1.
In the top of the first inning, the Owls loaded up the bases and Andrew McKenna hit a sac fly to drive in the first run of the game. Runde went on to give FIU four innings where he gave up one more run, but it wasn’t earned.
Runde gave up three hits, walked two, and struck out two. David Eckaus entered the game to later replace Runde.
Florida Atlantic starter C.J. Williams gave the Owls 5.2 innings, struck out three, walked two, and gave up one run off of three hits.
In the top of the fifth inning, Brendan Roney took Williams deep to left field to make it a 2-1 game and trail by just one run.
Williams would go on to give up two more base hits and he was eventually taken out, unable to complete the top of the sixth inning.
Eckaus would give up the third run of the game as John Schroeder, a name the Panthers know very well took him deep to left field to make it a 3-1 ballgame. That would be it for both offenses.
The Panthers’ best opportunity came in the top of the eighth inning. FIU loaded the bases with no outs and Kishon Frett struck out, Jeff Liquori flew out, but not deep enough, and Chase Engelhard lined out to center field.
The Owls would put the finishing touches on this game in the top of the bottom of the eighth inning when an RBI single drove in the fourth run of the game.
With the loss, FIU drops to 8-6 on the season while the Owls go to 7-5. Saturday’s game will be in Miami, and it will be streamed on ESPN+ at 5:00pm. Owen Puk will take the mound for the Panthers.
