Coral Gables, FL – Hanging onto the last ACC Tournament spot for dear life, the Miami Hurricanes have had some tough luck lately. Losing three straight ACC games is hard to overcome. They did everything right except for giving up costly turnovers against the Florida State Seminoles. It was a battle the Canes would succumb to against FSU in their 83-82 loss.

For the Noles, O’Mariah Gordon looked unsolvable. She scored a career-high 34 points and dished out seven assists. UM couldn’t seem to guard her from behind the arc, as she went 5-for-5 in that department. Adding insult to injury, FSU was missing NCAA leading scorer, Ta’Niya Latson due to an undisclosed injury. Regardless, the Canes failed to get Gordon off the score sheet.

Efficient shooting wasn’t efficient enough

If the only statistic you saw in the final box score was that UM had outperformed FSU in field goals, 53% – 51%, then you would’ve assumed the game ended in their favor.

Down 67-58 two minutes into the 4th quarter, the Canes had a scoring party by going on a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead. UM was already on point with their shots all afternoon long, but this three-minute run was the apex of their game.

Haley Cavinder led her team in scoring once again with 27 points. She also had a team-high of eight rebounds and seven assists, while recording one steal and a block. Whether it was a layup, three-pointer, or a free throw shot, her 4th quarter points would either give UM the lead or extend it. This marked the third time this season she scored 20+ points in consecutive games.

Jasmyne Roberts was phenomenal as well, scoring 16 points, including going 3-for-4 from downtown, while grabbing four rebounds.

Natalija Marshall reached double figures in points for the second consecutive game. Marshall finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

Cameron Williams put up 12 points and three rebounds. Unfortunately for her, she missed what could’ve been the game-winning shot in the last remaining second.

It was a great effort on both sides of the ball. Rebounds were equal for both teams at 32 each. The Canes led in assists 20-12, fast break points 22-4, and points off turnovers 17-14. They did also commit more turnovers though, 15-12. Had a stoppage gone in their favor, this game would’ve resulted in victory.

Ranked ACC opponent nightmare continues

The road towards punching a ticket to the ACC women’s basketball tournament does not get any easier. #1 Notre Dame will be making a pit stop in Coral Gables on Thursday, February 20th at 7:00 PM. As it currently stands, the Hurricanes do have control of the last spot, thanks to their tiebreaker over Pittsburgh.

Here’s what Coach Cullop said about her team’s chances of qualifying for the tournament,

“We’re doing everything we can to try to get in. I hope we do for these kids. Some of these players, a lot of our players…it’s their last year playing. And I hope for them we can get in, but we’re going to have to win some games to get there. And I think this group is up for the task and we’re just going to have to finish it.”
