CORAL GABLES, FL – After a disappointing result against the Miami Hurricanes at loanDepot park, FIU entered enemy territory and wasted no time getting on the board, eventually defeating J.D. Arteaga’s team by a final score of 10-2.

The FIU offense wasted no time getting to Hurricanes’ starter, Reese Lumpkin. After Alex Ulloa struck out, Kishon Frett worked a walk and Brylan West moved Frett to third on a base hit to left field.

On The Offensive Early

This would begin a streak of three straight RBI, Andrew Ildefonso with an RBI double, and Javier Crespo and Austin Dearing with RBI singles. Cole Cleveland would drive in both Crespo and Dearing on an RBI double down the right field line, knocking Lumpkin out of the game.

In the top of the third inning, Crespo hit his second home run of the season, leaving the bat at 102 mph and going 438 feet to left center over the Hurricanes’ scoreboard into their soccer field. FIU took a 6-2 lead.

Panthers’ starter Logan Runde only went one inning of work but didn’t allow any runs, just one hit. This would begin a bullpen game for FIU, with Ryan Reyerson allowing the Canes two runs in the bottom of the second inning.

A Light Sprinkle On The Mound

Julian Mlodzinski (1.2 IP) and Jaydon Bishop (4.0 IP) would follow Reyerson, shutting down the Canes’ lineup. Bishop’s four innings pitched marked a career-high. He struck out one and walked one.

In the top of the ninth, FIU denied any chance of a comeback for the Hurricanes by adding three runs. After Ulloa scored on a wild pitch, Dearing smacked an RBI single to bring home West. Lastly, Brendan Roney added one more run with a single to center field. Juan Villarreal closed out the game in 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out three batters to end the game.

This marks FIU’s second straight win at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. The Panthers now move to 20-10 and will continue the nine-game road trip in Ruston against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, starting on Friday, April 4th at 7pm.
