MIAMI, FL – Following a 6-0 shutout defeat, the FIU Softball team was poised for vengeance with a series win. Sunday afternoon, they did just that as FIU Softball came back to beat NMSU 3-2, thanks to a 6th-inning rally.
Quiet Game Offensively Until The 6th Inning
The Panthers were held to just two hits for the first five innings of the game. During the 3rd inning, they had the bases loaded with no outs. However, they responded with three swings and misses in a row.
Both pairs of runs for the New Mexico State Aggies came off of solo home runs. They came off the bats of both Desirae Spearman and Tamara Caranza. Besides those two earned runs, Megan Kruger pitched a complete game for FIU, throwing 89 pitches.
Spearman threw a complete game as well for the Aggies, keeping the Panthers in check for most of the game. Once the 6th inning came though, the game turned the page in FIU’s favor. Following a flyout, the Panthers had a combination of a walk, hit by pitch, and a single.
With the bases loaded, Paige Miller hit a sharp line drive single to right center field, driving in two runs. The momentum was there to keep going, and she was able to advance to second base. Kally Meredith came through on the next at-bat, hitting an RBI single to shortstop. All runners advanced since the shortstop wasn’t able to make a throw on time.
