FIU Men’s Basketball Blown Out By Flames, Drop Fifth Straight

MIAMI, FL – On the heels of a devastating losing streak in conference play, FIU Men’s Basketball had no answers for the Liberty Flames as they were demolished by a score of 82 to 59.

Not much worked for the Panthers in this game, but their 16 turnovers cost them dearly as the Flames capitalized with 19 points off of them. Despite Liberty being sloppy at times with the ball, it didn’t matter if FIU couldn’t capitalize off of them, let alone turn the ball back over.

Burned From Beyond The Arc

One of the better teams in Conference USA, Liberty was deadly from the arc, landing 11 shots. FIU on the other hand barely looked towards the three-point shot, and still disappointed with a 12.5 percentage.

Aside from the usual suspects in Jayden Brewer and Jonathan Aybar, no Panthers surprised anyone on offense. Whereas they struggled to get on offensive runs, Liberty had no problems opening up their lead in the second half.

Unfortunately, this was a vanilla game plan for FIU against one of the toughest opponents they’ll take on this season. They wanted to attack the rim, which wasn’t enough for a successful team from three like Liberty.

The Panthers had no answer for Liberty’s Taelon Peter, who led the Flames in points and rebounds with 21 and four, respectively. Truthfully, this game felt over at halftime because nothing FIU did was going to best Liberty’s offense.

A Nightmare Of A Conference Stretch

With the loss, FIU drops their record to 7-13. They have the second-worst conference record in CUSA, only ahead of Sam Houston.

That concudes the three-game homestand for the Panthers, as they’ll now have to head on the road. They’ll start in Alabama to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Thursday, January 30th at 7pm.
