MIAMI, FL – A great test to see how far FIU Baseball has come, their series opener against the Dallas Baptist Patriots was defined by major league pitching as the Panthers fell by a score of 9-3.
Game one came and went quickly as both teams kept scoring to a minimum, but the Patriots’ two-run homer in the second inning was just enough as they held on to a lead that they wouldn’t give up.
Likewise, FIU rebounded afterward with their bullpen. Still, their otherwise stellar batting order couldn’t assist tonight as their only run for the majority of their game came from an RBI groundout by Austin Dearing in the bottom of the fourth.
There’s no denying it, DBU’s Ryan Johnson is a potential first-round draft pick and he showed why, going eight innings and striking out 12 FIU batters.
Cam Knox opened up the game for FIU and went through four innings, giving up those two earned runs, but still struck out three batters before Zac Lampton and Jackson Ritchey stepped in and blanked the Patriots.
That was until the top of the eighth when DBU loaded the bases. With a full count, Ritchey threw outside and forced a walk, bringing home an insurance run.
Before you knew it, the game steered into the ninth inning where the Patriots blew it open and never looked back, bolstering their lead up to 9-1.
Kishon Frett got his money’s worth in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run homer to center field, but it wasn’t close to enough.
FIU will have to disregard this game quickly, though it does drop their record to 23-18, but more importantly, their CUSA record to 10-6. They’ll look to get revenge on DBU tomorrow at 5pm.
