MIAMI, FL – Considering the quality of their opponent, the FIU Panthers made the two games they won against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs look easy, and were only one solid hit away from a sweep.
Still, the Panthers keep finding ways to win three-game series’ against C-USA opponents, such as this one against the best team by record in the conference.
After what was essentially a blowout in Game One, FIU played a solid overall game the following day but came up just short.
Today, the Panthers made a dent in the scoreboard and never looked back, winning to the tune of an 8-3 blowout. They dropped four runs in the bottom of the first inning, primarily thanks to a three-run homer by Alex Ulloa to open the gates up early.
After that, the next five innings consisted of absolutely nothing from either side. On FIU’s part, Ryan Cabarcas put on a clinic, with four near-perfect innings, giving up four hits but allowing no runs, while striking out five batters.
This was another one of those games where everyone played their part with the bats, including the sixth inning when Brendan Roney smacked an RBI single to extend the lead further.
The Bulldogs eventually got some runs, bringing home a single runner in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to earn three total runs.
That was all negated by FIU’s performance from the seventh inning, with an RBI single by Adrian Figueroa, a sacrifice RBI from Ulloa, and a homer from Jeff Liquori to add eight total runs.
When FIU does win, they can do so by absolutely blowing out the competition. This improves their overall record to 15-13, and their C-USA record to 6-3.
A road trip is upcoming for the Panthers. They’ll first head to Fort Meyers to take on the FGCU Eagles on Tuesday, April 2nd at 6:30pm. Then, they’ll head to Alabama to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks for a weekend series, starting on Friday, April 5th at 7pm.
