MIAMI, FL – Despite a packed house at the FIU Baseball Field, the Panthers couldn’t hold on to an early lead as the Canes took over and won by a score of 6-5.
After beating Miami back on May 8th at Mark Light Field – their first win against the Canes since 2018 – FIU looked to carry that momentum to tonight’s contest.
Despite having a somewhat disappointing record of 23-27 record heading into this game, the Hurricanes still have power in their batting order, and that was clear in the first as a pair of RBI singles gave the Canes a 2-0 lead.
However, the Panthers found some success at bat by scoring three unanswered runs in three total innings in response, ultimately taking a 3-2 advantage.
A solo home run by Alex Ulloa in the bottom of the second inning kicked things off. In his last home game as a Panther, Ryne Guida made the most of it with a pair of earned runs off a couple of RBIs.
But one of FIU’s weaknesses this season reared its ugly head again as the bullpen couldn’t contain the Canes. After four straight runs tailing into the eighth inning, UM gave themselves a comfortable 6-3 lead.
Granted, the Panthers came back strong in the bottom of the eighth as Guida scored on a wild pitch, then Chase Engelhard brought in a run of a sacrifice fly ball.
But it wasn’t enough as the Canes’ defense stopped them there and continued into the ninth inning as Miami held on by a score of 6-5.
With the loss, the Panthers stand with a 25-26 overall record and finish the season with a home record of 16-17.
Their final weekend series of the 2024 season will be in Des Moines as they’ll take on the Iowa Hawkeyes starting on Thursday, May 16th at 7:35pm.
