Stress-free baseball is hard to come by sometimes, but FIU had no troubles taking out the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats by a final score of 9-1 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
In just four innings of work, the Panthers scored seven unanswered runs. FIU’s offense racked up 13 hits, while its pitching staff held the Wildcats to just one run over nine innings.
The first inning was simple, only consisting of an RBI single by Andrew Ildefonso. The second inning was where FIU pulled away with three more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Alex Ulloa. Before you knew it, FIU led by a score of 4-0.
On the mound, Owen Puk only allowed one hit in four scoreless innings, striking out six Wildcats – a season-high. FIU’s bullpen was also solid, with Jayden Bishop giving two scoreless innings.
Meanwhile, Toby Harper shut down B-CU in the seventh, and Bryce Turner closed the game in the ninth.
The Panthers added on two more runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a Bethune-Cookman error and a wild pitch to extend their lead to 9-0. While the eighth inning saw the Wildcats’ first run of the game, it was too little, too late.
In total, five Panthers had multiple hits in this game. Hector Candelas led the way with three of his own, followed by Ulloa, Kishon Frett, and Austin Dearing, among other Panthers with two hits.
With the win, FIU improved its record to 17-9, the best start to a season since 2014. This Bethune-Cookman midweek matchup was just the start of a long road trip for the Panthers.
They’ll head to Murfreesboro to take on the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders for a three-game series. That’ll start on Friday, March 28th at 7pm.
