After three seasons with FIU Football, head coach Mike MacIntyre has been fired. This was (possibly) first reported by Matt Zenitz and was later confirmed by FIU Athletics in an official statement.
MacIntyre has been the head coach of FIU since December 9th, 2021. He was the first hire that FIU AD Scott Carr made when he joined FIU Athletics not long before.
With a 12-24 record at FIU, this past season for the Panthers has been one of the most difficult. With five one-score losses, FIU has been a few big plays away from bowl eligibility.
“This was a decision based solely on on-field results, and at this time I felt our program needed to go in a different direction,” said Scott Carr. “While we have been more competitive on the field each of the last three seasons, unfortunately, our win-loss record is not indicative of those statistical improvements.”
“Winning championships and bowl games is our goal. With that standard in place, a comprehensive national search for a new head coach will begin immediately, and I will have no further comment until that process is completed.”
Until a new head coach is named, current FIU defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt has been named the interim coach. Dewitt joined the Panthers in 2022.
FIU was scheduled to hold its initial press conference for the first national signing period this upcoming Wednesday, December 3rd. With today’s news, however, it’s uncertain if that will remain the case.
