Hurricanes Sign New Transfers

CORAL GABLES, FL – The Hurricanes Men’s Basketball team has announced the signings of several new transfers over the past few weeks as the team’s roster is starting to shape up for the upcoming season.

Salih Altuntas

Altuntas is a 6-10, 270-pound center from Turkey. He spent the majority of the past season playing for Istanbul Anka Spor, averaging 10.1 points, and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting for 54.1% from the field in 19 contests. Altuntas played 13 games as well during the 2024-25 season for Anadolu Efes in the Turkey-U 19 League. While there, he averaged 15.2 points, 13.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game.

“Salih is dominant force around the basket, using his size and skill to outwork his opponents,” Lucas said. “He brings several years of international experience to our roster and will make an immediate impact on the court.”

Timotej Malovec

Malovec is a 6’8, 180-pound forward from Slovakia. Last season while overseas, he played for Mega Superbet in the ABA League First Division. Malovec averaged 6.1 points, and 3.1 rebounds per game, while shooting for 36.5% from behind the arc. He has also represented his home country nationally, having competed in the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket Qualifiers. In six games, Timotej Malovec averaged 8.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.

“Timotej is an extremely versatile player who can not only attack the basket, but also be a threat from the perimeter,” Lucas said. “His maturity and experience playing overseas make him a great fit for our program and we cannot wait for him to get to Miami.”

John Laboy II

Laboy II is a 6’2, 180-pound guard from Texas. He averaged 14.2 points, 4.0 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 45% from the floor last season. Laboy led St. Francis Episcopal to the TAPPS 4A State Title. He is a three-star recruit who was named to the Houston Chronicle’s All-TAPPS Second Team as a senior. Laboy II also played shortstop and pitcher for his baseball team in high school.

“I have known John and his family a long time through our Houston roots and I am very excited to welcome him to the Miami family,” Lucas said. “John has a high basketball IQ and is the ultimate teammate. He is someone I see growing with the program and I know that he will positively impact the culture we want to build at The U.”
