Miami, Florida – Xavier Edwards produced his 12th multi-hit game of the season, but it’s not enough as the Miami Marlins lost 4-2 to the San Francisco Giants. X tied the franchise record for most hits in a game in his first game back from the injured list. Jesús Sánchez was the last player to do so on September 17, 2024, versus the Dodgers. Edwards carried the Fish’s offense as the only batter recording hits until the sixth. Miami had two opportunities to put up runs, loading the bases in the seventh and eighth innings, squandering both with groundouts. Luis Matos ruined Ryan Weathers’ day with his fourth home run of the season, launching the starter’s changeup towards left-center. Weathers tossed six innings, surrendering four earned runs on five hits, striking out seven, and issuing three free passes. The Giants’ offense had struggled all week. They hadn’t scored four runs since May 23rd. It was also Xavier’s first start at second base this year.

San Francisco opened up the scoring during the third when Heliot Ramos scored on the Wilmer Flores groundout. The road team extended their lead courtesy of Matos via a three-run dinger. Weathers retired Willy Adames but walked Casey Schmitt before inducing a pop-up from Mike Yastrzemski for out number two. Patrick Bailey singled, setting up for Weathers’ lone blemish. After relying on Edwards for half the game, the Fish strung together three consecutive hits courtesy of X, Sánchez, and Otto Lopez, recording Miami’s first run in the form of an RBI single.

Edwards drove in another in the following frame, hitting a high chopper off the plate, leaving third baseman Matt Chapman without a play in the bases-loaded situation. Lopez had a chance to drive in more, however he grounded out to end the inning. The Marlins found themselves with the bases juiced again for the eighth, only to squander it once more with Javier Sanoja grounding out. Miami drops to 23-34 and will now host the Colorado Rockies to start the week.

Impressions

Welcome back, Edwards. It’s good to see him resume his duties in the lineup. The leadoff man was out since May 14th and made an appearance in yesterday’s contest as a pinch-hitter. It’s tough to see the Marlins lose a close one, it’s something of a theme for them. What makes it more frustrating is that it was against a beatable team. Shame Weathers didn’t get run support. The silver lining is that the team is healthier with X’s return.
