MIAMI, FL – Following a surprising 8-7 start to the season, the Miami Marlins have gone 4-11 since. Sitting in at 12-18 and last place in the NL East, the Marlins find themselves in a tough spot.
They are dead last in team ERA (5.87), runs allowed (186), and have given up the most bases on balls (137). Marlins starting pitchers have struggled to pitch deep into games, causing the bullpen to be overworked at times. The longest outing this season thus far goes to Max Meyer, who threw 6.1 innings in an April 9th start against the Mets.
On the other hand, the Athletics have been a big surprise so far in the first month of baseball. Nobody expected them to be 17-15 in a competitive AL West. This team is headlined by young hitters such as Tyler Soderstrom and Jacob Wilson who have shown signs of promise.
Both teams enter the series under separate circumstances. The Athletics won three out of four against the Texas Rangers, while the Marlins are entering the series after getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Marlins couldn’t contain the Athletics in the series opener. Valente Bellozo got bounced after 4.2 innings, and the bats failed to amount to much. The Fish would go on to lose this game by a score of 6-1.
Bellozo works through longest outing of season
Bellozo had only started two games before being sent down to AAA Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Valente Bellozo went through the first inning with ease, but then ran into trouble in the 2nd inning. A combination of walks and a hit by pitch led to the bases being loaded. Nick Kurtz got the scoring going for the A’s with a single and then Bellozo issued a bases-loaded walk to Wilson.
He did improve somewhat as his start progressed, having himself a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th inning. However, the deep counts and free passes to first base would come back to haunt him. He ended up being responsible for five earned runs. Former Marlin, J.J. Bleday, seemed to get the best of Valente Bellozo. Bleday hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning and would later be the last batter he faced after hitting a double in the 5th inning.

Quiet night offensively for the Marlins
The Marlins had nothing going for them in the batter’s box. They had their hits, but none of them were of grand importance. Their lone run was a solo home run by Dane Myers in the 6th inning. Aside from that, they only ended the night with three runners left on base while going 1-for-2 with runners in scoring position.

The only other Marlin who had a good night at the plate was Eric Wagaman. He went 3-for-4.
The debut of Vice
Tomorrow’s game will start at 4:10 PM and the probable pitchers are Osvaldo Bido (2-2, 4.31 ERA, 17 K) and Max Meyer (2-3, 3.18 ERA, 47 K).
The highly anticipated Nike City Connect jersey for the Marlins will make its debut on the field. It’s the start of a new alternate uniform era for them as they previously wore the red Sugar Kings jerseys for the past four seasons.
