Los Angeles, CA – The Miami Marlins continued their west coast trip by facing off against the reigning World Series champs, Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, there weren’t many positives in this three-game series as the Dodgers were able to complete the sweep against the Marlins.
Game 1 – Marlins push game into extras but Dodgers walk it off
Edward Cabrera’s start was more or less the same as every other one he’s had this season. He got replaced in the game after throwing 97 pitches in just four innings of work. Cabrera showed some command issues once again, throwing 40 balls. The Dodgers took advantage on some of the deep counts, scoring five runs on nine hits.
Things were looking pretty bleak on the Marlins end until the top of the 6th inning arrived. Manager Clayton McCullough made the call to pinch hit Dane Myers for Matt Mervis with the bases juiced. Keep in mind, that Mervis has one of the higher OPS in baseball amongst lefties. Dustin May threw a high four-seam fastball and Myers made him pay, hitting a grand slam to tie it up at 5.

Into the 10th inning, Jesus Sanchez was able to hit a liner to right field for a double to score in a run. Unfortunately, that pivotal moment didn’t last long. Tommy Edman walked it off in the bottom half of the inning with a single, scoring two runs, to win the game 7-6.
Game 2 – Dodgers win Tuesday’s contest in a blowout
The Marlins got off to a strong start. Xavier Edwards hit his first triple of the season to leadoff the game and then Dane Myers drove him in with an RBI. After that, it was all Dodgers.
Dodger Stadium hasn’t been friendly to Sandy Alcantara and this game proved so. Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez, Edman, Andy Pages, and Mookie Betts each gave him trouble. Some of these runs may have been prevented if Alcantara was able to throw more strikes. The 6’5 pitcher allowed five bases on balls, seven hits, and seven runs in just 2.2 innings of work.
Although Tyler Phillips did excellent in his two innings of work, the rest of the bullpen struggled to keep the game in control. George Soriano didn’t have any success at all. It felt like everyone in the Dodgers’ lineup got on base with him on the mound. By the time he was taken out, it was a forgettable 12-2 game for the Marlins.

The bats for the Marlins weren’t quiet at all, they just couldn’t finish the job, and score runs when they had to. Edwards went 2-for-4, Myers was 3-for-3, and Otto Lopez was 2-for-4. However, the Fish were 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
It’s safe to say that it has been a long game if you ever see Javier Sanoja on the mound pitching. The game finished in a 15-2 lobsided Dodgers win.
Game 3 – Bullpen lets game get out of hand for the Fish
It was a tale of two stories for both team’s starting pitchers. Cal Quantrill continued to show his struggles on the mound and failed to make it through the 4th inning. With the Fish down 4-0, his season ERA shot up to 8.10. Tony Gonsolin on the other hand, had a great outing in his first appearance since having Tommy John Surgery in 2023. He struck on nine and lasted six innings.
Kyle Stowers had himself a career day. Stowers went 4-for-4 with four hits, two home runs, and 4 RBIs. It was easily the best performance of his young career.

Trialing just 6-3 in the 6th inning, Jesus Tinoco only made matters worse. Betts and Freddie Freeman did enough damage in his brief 0.1 inning appearance. Luarbert Arias really had to work through the 8th inning. The righty threw 41 pitches, including a costly wild pitch.
The Marlins were able to get four runs back in the 9th inning, but they were running on garbage time by then. Despite the 12-7 loss, the bats did come alive by providing nine hits. Unfortunately, the bullpen just continued to underperform by not keeping the game close.
