Lumen Field – A helpless Inter Miami CF lost the Leagues Cup 2025 Final 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders on Sunday night. The star-studded Heron squad could not overcome the defensive discipline, passion, and coordinated team play of Seattle, led by Paul Rothrock. Osaze De Rosario, Alex Roldan, and Paul Rothrock scored on a glorious championship night for the Sounders.
Starting XI
Javier Mascherano’s lineup consisted of Oscar Ustari in goal, with Jordi Alba, Maxi Falcon, Gonzalo Luján, and Ian Fray as the defensive back four. Sergio Busquets, Tadeo Allende, Rodrigo De Paul, and Yannick Bright in the midfield. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the attack.

Match Action
The Sounders immediately applied high pressure on the Herons, making Miami uncomfortable on the ball, which led to several errant passes out of the back. Inter Miami attempted to maintain possession and create passing sequences, but Seattle’s defensive intensity was overwhelming for the slower, less athletic Miami squad.
In the 26th minute, Osaze De Rosario headed a cross in by Alex Roldan past Ustari for the 1-0 Seattle lead.
Gonzalo Lujan comes way off his line & then tries to run back to cover his center back spot but is too late as De Rosario heads a cross past Ustari for the Seattle 1-0 lead..#LeaguesCup2025 #MLS #MLSes #InterMiamiCF

Sergio Busquets and Rodrigo De Paul were both out of position, leaving a space in the middle for a Sounder’s player to receive a pass freely, without any pressure. Gonzalo Lujan comes out of his center back spot to try and apply pressure, but leaves a huge gap that De Rosario exploits with a run into space. Lujan cannot get back to cover and can only watch as Roldan’s pass is headed in by the Seattle forward.
In the buildup to Seattle’s 1st goal, De Paul & Busquets are out of position, Lujan comes out of his cb spot to cover & leaves the space for De Rosario to make a clean run on goal for the header & 1-0 Sounders lead. In the 40th minute, Jesus Ferreira slams a shot off the Miami goalpost after receiving a short pass all alone near the box. It would have been a 2-0 Seattle lead in the first half. De Paul and Busquets once again are nowhere to be found, while Bright is the only midfielder seen running back into the frame to try and help defend.

Luis Suarez put Messi in on goal in the 50th minute with a phenomenal pass inside the box that Lionel blasted over the crossbar in a rare point-blank range miss for him.

Suarez played another phenomenal through ball in the 60th minute that Tadeo Allende, to everyone’s amazement, missed wide of the wide-open Seattle goal.
In the 82nd minute, Georgi Minoungou is brought down in the box by Yannick Bright.

Alex Roldan steps up and executes a well-placed kick to give Seattle a commanding 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation time.

Postgame
After the match, one of Seattle’s heroes, Paul Rothrock, spoke about what makes the Sounders team special,
This is a group of good human beings who work hard and believe in each other and play for each other, and I’m really proud that our method won out tonight.
Unity, belief, passion, and talent led the way for the Sounders in Leagues Cup 2026. Inter Miami could learn a lesson about maintaining a group of young players together to develop and grow into champions. The current blueprint has not yielded the expected results, but it has not been a failure either. Miami has been must-watch TV and widely entertaining while winning many games. Unfortunately, there have been missed opportunities for more trophies.
Final Thoughts
Everyone has seen the terrible videos of the post-match brawl between Inter Miami and Seattle Sounders Leagues Cup match. There are also videos circulating of a brawl outside the stadium between fans of the teams. Immediately, Inter Miami players and their fans have been condemned as the guilty party without getting both sides of the story. Regardless, Luis Suarez, along with other Inter Miami players, showed deplorable behavior, no matter the facts.
Obed Vargas seemed to instigate Luis Suarez verbally after the match, allegedly, and Suarez, instead of acting like a composed veteran player, reacted like a child who could not control his emotions. This all escalated into the brawl we saw on TV. In the coming days, more information could become available, but the damage has been done to the player’s image and the organization’s as well. Suarez already had other infamous instances of bad behavior, so he does not get the benefit of the doubt.
Outside the stadium, some of the Miami supporters have claimed that a few Sounders supporters attempted to take some of their team flags, and they reacted accordingly by fighting back. This is all speculation at the moment, but whatever the circumstance was, this behavior between fanbases is disturbing.
Seattle gave Miami a lesson in how to win a championship game. It seems unreal to write that, given that Inter has multiple players who have won a World Cup and countless other trophies, but on Sunday night, Inter Miami was outplayed, outcoached, and outclassed.
