MIAMI, FL – Following an eventful 6-2-win last night over the Braves, the Marlins were looking to continue their successes at the plate. It was Flanigan’s Fest at the ballpark, and it was definitely a full house. Today was a rare game where the upper most deck at Loan Depot Park had fans present. In his third start of the season, Eury Perez showed many signs of improvement, but the Miami Marlins still fell to the Atlanta Braves, 7-0.

Eury Perez improves in his third start of 2025

Even though he got the loss today, it was still the best performance for Perez this season thus far. In his first start back from Tommy John Surgery, he threw 70 pitches in three innings. In start number two, he was able to throw 79 pitches in four innings. Today, he threw 89 pitches in four and two-thirds innings.

The first inning for Eury Perez didn’t get off to a great start as he issued a four-pitch walk to Ronald Acuña Jr. Perez was able to get both Matt Olson and Austin Riley to pop up in the field. Then came former Marlin, Marcell Ozuna, to the plate and hit a double to score Acuña Jr.

Over the next few innings, his velocity seemed to increase. His four-seam fastball in particular would go from 97-98 to 98-99. Eventually, he hit the triple digits, hitting speeds up to 100.4 mph.

After the 4th inning was over and with no one warming up in the Marlins bullpen, it indicated that Perez had the green light for the next inning. The hope was for him to cruise through the inning as he did in the previous ones. That ended up being far from the case as he got bounced from the game after recording two outs.

Once Ronald Acuña Jr doubled, the Braves were back in scoring position. Austin Riley would end up getting the RBI to make it a 2-0 game.

Despite the loss, Eury Perez’s outing can’t be underestimated. He was able to issue a season-high in strikeouts and threw his highest strike total so far in 2025, with 58. Expect him to progress back into pre-Tommy John Surgery mode soon.

MLB debut for Josh Simpson

Josh Simpson had an MLB debut that he’ll want to forget very soon. Selected out of AA Jacksonville today, the left-hander had to fight through his two innings. He ended up throwing 43 pitches, with one of them being a costly wild pitch.

By the time he was placed in the game, the Marlins seemed out of it. The icing on the cake was when Drake Baldwin launched a sweeper into right center field.

Marlins fail to score any runs

The Marlins had their opportunities to score, but they came to no avail. Several prominent players had their chances to come up with a big hit. In the first inning with runners on first and third, Agustin Ramirez whiffed on the slider three pitches in a row. Kyle Stowers followed up with a fly-out.

In the second inning, they had runners in the same position. How did the Marlins respond? Connor Norby struck out and Dane Myers grounded into a double play. With the bags loaded in the fifth inning, Ramirez struck out swinging.

Miami couldn’t figure out Grant Holmes’ pitching. Holmes threw five and two-thirds and issued five punchouts. Even with five his walks allowed, the Marlins weren’t able to drive in a run. The Marlins finished the night going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left nineA runners on base.

Series finale

Tomorrow’s game will feature Bryce Elder (2-3, 4.45 ERA, 51 K) for the Braves and Sandy Alcantara (3-8, 6.88 ERA, 55 K) for the Marlins. First pitch is at 1:40 pm and is the last game of the homestand before the Marlins head out west.
