BOCA RATON, FL – While FIU Baseball entered this midweek matchup against Florida Atlantic on a massive high, their midweek roster fell low. The Owls snapped their four-game winning streak by a score of 5-2. With the win, FAU also took the season series over FIU, three games to one.
This may have been the Panthers’ worst game against the Owls this season on offense and defense. They only recorded eight hits while committing three errors. Surprisingly, this was also the first game in the series where FIU did NOT lead after the first inning.
As it was a midweek, the Panthers rolled out some different starters than usual. They’re preparing for their weekend series against Dallas Baptist. As such, they rolled out Ryan Reyerson to make his first start for FIU on the mound. He was limited, however, tossing 1.1 innings and allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out two.
There’s Something About The Owls
Florida Atlantic came out swinging with a pair of runs in the second and third innings. It could have been even worse, but Hector Candelas kept it close with a highlight-reel catch in right-center field, robbing a potential two-run homer.
The biggest bright spot in this game for the Panthers was yet another dinger for Kishon Frett – his 18th of the season. The solo shot to left field moved him into a tie for fourth all-time in FIU history alongside Edwin Rios in 2015. Frett also leads Conference USA and ranks second in home runs across the nation.
Still, the Owls didn’t let up and scored three unanswered runs to pull away from the Panthers. FIU tried to rally in the ninth with a sacrifice fly from Cole Cleveland, but that was it.
Just like that, FIU’s four-game winning streak is snapped. As mentioned earlier, they’ll head to Texas to take on the Dallas Baptist Patriots this weekend. The series opener is on Friday, May 2nd at 7:05 PM.
