Five Things For Miami To Get Past Vancouver Wednesday Night

Inter Miami CF suffered a stunning 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal matchup versus the Vancouver Whitecaps. Vancouver outplayed the Herons despite Miami controlling possession of the ball during the game. The second leg will be played on Wednesday night, and if  Inter Miami is to revert the result, a few things must happen.

Messi & Suarez Need To Connect

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were an unstoppable duo while winning championships with Barcelona. Now in Miami, they are not the players they used to be, but they are still formidable. Last season, Suarez had 20 goals and 9 assists, while Messi had 20 goals and 16 assists, great stats for both. Neither is in their best form, but given their pedigree, Wednesday night could see them turn back the clock. Inter Miami CF will have a well-rested Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, and if they can play off each other like they have so many times in the past, the Herons have a chance.

Segovia & Allende Must Step Up

Telasco Segovia and Tadeo Allende began their first season with Inter Miami, showing lots of flash and skill. Segovia scored three goals and dished out one assist, while Allende scored two goals. Their hot starts have fizzled out since, with neither playing at the same level they began the season with. Allende was injured and missed some time, and Segovia just seems to have tired out from the match-heavy calendar the Herons have. There is no denying that both players are talented and provide much-needed speed along with intensity when they are at their best. The veteran core of Inter Miami needs Segovia and Allende to shine Wednesday night if they are to contain Vancouver’s talented midfield.

Clean Sheet

The Miami backline has a tall task Wednesday night versus Vancouver: maintain the clean sheet. Mascherano has to get the backline selection perfect for Wednesday’s game. The Whitecaps have a strong attack, and Brian White is, in my opinion, the MLS MVP at the moment. Whatever Mascherano’s selection is, the starting backline must be flawless to earn the clean sheet.  Alba, Aviles, Falcon, and Weigandt could be the picks.

Macherano Must Read The Game

Mascherano is not the most experienced coach in MLS; in fact, he is a rookie Head Coach. The game Wednesday night is undoubtedly the most important of his short career. He must be flawless in his lineup selection, flawless with his tactics, and flawless with his in-game decisions and substitutions. That is a task and a challenge, “El Jefecito” will surely meet head on.

Chase Stadium Must Rock

In Vancouver, the Whitecaps felt the home-field advantage every second of the match versus Miami. The Herons’ faithful must do the same Wednesday night. Chase Stadium must be noisy, vibing, and rocking. Inter Miami CF needs to feel that positive energy from the fans all night long. That atmosphere is what propels tired legs forward and gets aging superstars to play vintage championship futbol.
