Kennesaw, GA – FIU starter Easton Marks pitched seven strong innings, totaling 114 pitches, but despite his efforts, the offense scored one run on four hits and fell to the KSU Owls by a final score of 3-1. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 22-15 on the season and 6-6 in conference play.
Marks, who FIU brought in from Nevada, turned in his strongest start in the blue and gold. He provided a career-high seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, three walks, and eight strikeouts.
Head coach Rich Witten turned to Jaydon Bishop, who pitched the eighth inning. He was able to shut down the Owls’ lineup, striking out two batters.
Going into Thursday’s game, FIU led Conference USA with 366 strikeouts and were fifth in walks, which is already an improvement from prior years.
Unfortunately, it was the offense that didn’t pull its weight. Owls’ starter Ty Bayer went 5 ⅓ innings and surrendered one run on one hit. He also walked seven and struck out five.
The night’s story for the FIU offense was the inability to drive in runs. They finished the game with 12 runners left on base.
With the loss, FIU has a 1-11 record when trailing after the sixth inning. Owen Puk will take the mound for FIU on Friday at 6pm in Kenensaw, Georgia.
