MIAMI, FL – After struggling lately, FIU Baseball hit the reset button dominantly, demolishing the Bucknell Bison with a run rule by a score of 22-6 in the first of a four-game series.
With the bases loaded, third baseman Javier Crespo grounded into a fielder’s choice, driving in first baseman Brylan West to give FIU an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, right fielder Hector Candelas knocked his 12th RBI of the season, driving in Brylan West once again. Panthers took a 2-0 lead. FIU center fielder Albert Serrano, who had been hitless in his last three games, knocked in an RBI triple to drive in two more runs, giving FIU a 4-0 lead.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, West and left fielder Kishon Frett worked walks, driving in two more runs. After Hector Candelas grounded out to second and second baseman Kareh Valentin scored, FIU took a commanding 7-3 lead.
FIU added onto their lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Kareh Valentin RBI single, driving in shortstop Alex Ulloa. A wild pitch drove in Valentin and gave FIU a 10-3 lead.
Flying Away In The Fifth
What followed was one of the more dominant innings of baseball we’ve seen on offense for FIU in a while. 12 total runs were scored, including five singles, two sacrifice flyouts, a double, and a triple.
While Bucknell managed three runs in the top of the seventh, the game was called from there with a run rule.
Making his first start of the season, redshirt freshman Andrew Ildefonso gave FIU two innings, allowing one run off of one hit, walking one, and striking out one.
Following Ildefonso was redshirt junior Ryan Reyerso, who was making his FIU debut. After enrolling in 2023, Reyerson missed the 2024 season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. In one inning, Reyerson allowed two runs off three hits, no walks, and one strikeout.
With the win, FIU improved their record to 13-6 and will look to win back-to-back games on Friday at 6:30pm. Easton Marks will take the mound for the Panthers.
