MIAMI, FL – Owen Puk took the mound for his fourth start of the season against a Merrimack team that looked to spoil the Panthers’ series sweep. Although Puk had a strong start for the most part, it was the offense for both teams that combined for 28 runs in a game that had to end due to a 3:15 cut-off time.
Puk, who went five innings for FIU, struggled early on, surrendering three runs in the top of the first and two more in the fifth. He finished the afternoon with six strikeouts and allowed eight hits.
Although it was a weird start for Puk, this would tie a career-high in innings pitched, and he still kept his team in a position to win throughout the game, thanks to the red-hot FIU offense.
Kishon Frett went on to finish the series with three-straight home runs. He is now slashing .412/.530/.863 with five home runs and 12 RBI on the season.
Following Sunday’s 18-10 win, FIU now leads Conference USA in the following categories – home runs, RBI, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, doubles, and hit by pitches.
FIU will make its way to loanDepot Park in what will be the most highly anticipated non-conference game of the season against the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday, March 4th at 7pm. The Panthers will act as the home team.
