MIAMI, FL – By far, the most notable Panther to enter the transfer portal for baseball is starting pitcher Joel Pineiro.
Last season for FIU, he posted a 7.80 ERA, 8.3 K/9, and 5.5 BB/9 through 57.2 innings pitched. He enters the portal with two years of eligibility left.
Pineiro wasn’t a Rich Witten recruit but like many stuck around as he recovered from Tommy John surgery and eventually made four starts for FIU posting a 4.91 ERA, 11.0 K/9, and 2.5 BB/9 through 7.1 innings pitched. A limited, but encouraging sample size.
Entering his Junior season, Pineiro was set to be the Panther’s Friday starter in the rotation as there’s a lot of upside with the right-handed pitcher.
The now-former Panther showed a lot of promise and room for improvement as he made every single start this season. He also was successful against Power Four schools such as Notre Dame, Miami, and Iowa.
An ideal fit for Pineiro would be joining the Miami Hurricanes to deepen the pitching staff that they have. He’s shown success against great talent and in what seems like a potential rebuilding season for the Canes, so Pineiro can be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Pineiro ends his FIU career posting a 7.48 ERA, 8.6 K/9, and 5.1 BB/9 through 65.0 innings pitched.
