CORAL GABLES, FL – In a game where the Panthers looked to snap a ten-game losing streak against the Miami Hurricanes in baseball, it wasn’t enough as, once again, the Canes found a way to win in the bottom of the ninth by a final score of 4-3.
The Panthers wasted no time getting on the board as Austin Dearing extended his hitting streak to seven games and Ryne Guida drove him in on an RBI double of his own. Jeff Liquori, who was hitting sixth for the second game in a row drove in Dearing on an RBI single to make it an early 2-0 lead.
Panthers starter David Eckaus gave the Panthers strong two innings, but after having a 2-0 lead to play with, the game would become tied after giving up an RBI to Daniel Cuvet, driving in Blake Cyr who had a double in his first at-bat.
After Cuvet stole third, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. drove him in to tie the game up at two apiece.
In the top of the seventh inning, FIU would strike gold to take the lead and when the Panthers needed a run, Dearing provided it taking reliever Brian Walters deep to right field to make it a 3-2 game. That was Dearing’s second homer of the season.
It didn’t take long for the Canes to tie this game up at three, however. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Jackson Ritchey got into some trouble as he gave up the game-tying run, but it primarily came on an error from Alex Ulloa who had a bad throw to Brylan West.
West got hurt on the play and ended up coming out. Adrian Figueroa entered the game to replace him.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. walked it off and an error by Ryan Cabarcas and catcher Nick Pitelli ended it.
The Panthers fall to 11-10, and will now head up to Bowling Green for their second C-USA series of the year against Western Kentucky.
As for this crosstown rivalry, the Canes head to FIU Baseball Stadium to take on the Panthers on Tuesday, March 26 at 6 pm.
