MIAMI, FL – After suffering a 12-3 loss against the Seton Hall Pirates on Friday, the Panthers looked to bounce back with Owen Puk on the mound who made his third start of the season.
For Puk, it looked like a step back compared to his last outing against Notre Dame. Going 1.1 innings pitched against the Pirates, he gave up five runs, with three earned, and only struck out one.
Puk still struggles to consistently throw strikes and his secondary pitches haven’t fooled anyone yet, but no walks are encouraging. It just looked like Seton Hall saw him well.
Between three pitchers, the Panthers gave up 12 runs. Puk gave up five (three earned), Kevin Martin gave up five more and Jaydon Bishop gave up two (one earned).
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Panthers began what would be a ten-run comeback. The inning began with a Ronny Medina walk which would then be followed up by a Sammy Fischer strikeout.
Thankfully, an Adrian Figueroa hit-by pitch set up Austin Dearing to drive in Ronny Medina and move Figueroa to third.
Ryne Guida, Hector Candelas, Kishon Frett, and Andre Martinez all had an RBI in the bottom of the seventh to put the Panthers within five.
In the bottom of the eighth, Medina once again got the inning started with a hit by pitch which was then followed by a passed ball which then would end up scoring Medina after Samuel Fischer had his first career hit.
The Panthers would end up scoring three more runs in the eighth inning to make it a 12-10 game. The Pirates scored one more run off of Richie Peña which made it what the final score would be – 13-10.
The Panthers are back at it Sunday at noon as they aim for a series split against Seton Hall. Joel Pineiro will take the mound for the Panthers.
