MIAMI, FL – After a hot 2-0 start to the season, the FIU Women’s basketball team has struggled as of late, losing three out of their last four before matching up against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Vice Night.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, their recent struggles continued as they could not form a late rally and ultimately fell by a score of 81-69.
Aside from a lack of scoring, the game looked promising early on as FIU racked up 10 steals and hit their free throws. But ultimately, after having a 14-13 lead with three minutes to go in the first quarter, GS took over and never gave their lead up.
Aside from an earlier loss to FGCU, this was the worst shooting performance from the field for the Panthers this season as they shot only 29.2%.
Even worse, their inability to cash in from beyond the arc was surprising considering their previous success, leading all of C-USA in the category.
The latter end of the game became a foul-fest for the Panthers as the refs were not hesitant with the whistles. Four different FIU players fouled out of the game – Mya Kone, Angena Belloso, Ajae Yoakum, and Olivia Trice.
Defensively, FIU didn’t have a bad game, but they had no answer for Georgia Southern’s Terren Ward, who went 10-16 with 29 points and 10 rebounds.
On FIU’s end, Belloso led all Panthers with 11 points, while Sariana Rodriguez Camacho came off the bench and added 10 points. As a team, FIU went 19-65 from the field, committed 22 turnovers, and was called for 25 fouls.
The Panthers now stand with a record of 3-4 and will continue their current homestand with a matchup against the Jacksonville Dolphins on December 1st at 7pm.
