The FIU Women’s Soccer team had the pleasure of opening the 2024 Fall Semester of sports for FIU Athletics and didn’t let it go to waste.
Despite a 30-minute delay due to lightning in the area, FGCU found the back of the net less than 14 minutes in, and it was up to the Panthers to respond.
Right before halftime, FIU found their answer as freshman defender Antonella Solari nabbed a goal from the right side of the net, claiming an equalizer.
Both teams were in a stalemate that lasted around 25 minutes. Eventually, FIU got what it needed. Senior forward Nikole Solis nailed a shot off the top right of the goal for their first lead of the match.
The Panthers’ defense held strong, as sophomore goalkeeper Valery Restrepo only had to face three shots on goal, saving one of them.
In total, FIU recorded 19 shots with 12 on goal, eclipsing FGCU’s five total shots. The Panthers also collected 7 fouls in the process, one less than the Eagles.
FIU will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday, August 18th at 8pm.
