Panthers’ Lead Slips Away in 2-2 Draw Against FGCU

On Thursday night, FIU’s lead slipped away in a 2-2 draw against Florida Gulf Coast. This Florida rivalry matchup lived up to the hype, with both teams firing on all cylinders in a heated, back-and-forth battle. Entering the match, FGCU led the series 13-2-2 over FIU, with their last matchup resulting in a scoreless draw.

FIU has struggled offensively so far this season, entering the matchup with just two goals scored on the year. Facing two of their toughest opponents earlier this year vs No.2 Duke and No.4 Florida State, the Panthers had some rust to shake off vs the Eagles. On the flip side, FGCU was coming off a huge 3-2 win over SEC opponent Louisiana State University (LSU).

Within the first five minutes of the match, FIU found themselves on the board to take a 1-0 lead. However, a Panther didn’t score the goal; it came off the head of FGCU goalie Lily Borders. The Eagles shifted gears and started attacking to try to even the game. With 30 minutes left in the first half, FGCU had one of their best looks, but Panther co-captain Valery Restrepo was right on time to keep them scoreless.

A few minutes would pass, and FIU’s Kiara Clarke would get called for a penalty, setting up a FGCU penalty kick. Taylor Latini would go on to kick the game-tying goal with just over 25 minutes to play in the first half. The stat sheet at the half was pretty even; both teams put up five shots, with four of them on goal for FIU and three for FGCU.

Kicking off the second half, FIU was now on the attack to take the lead back. Maria Lucia Dogliani was dealt a yellow card two minutes into the half, but that did hold her back. Just a few minutes later, she would retaliate with her first Panther career goal to jump ahead 2-1. Maria was assisted by senior forward Mariana Barreto who notched her first Panther assist of the year.

With tensions starting to rise, Head Coach Matt Dunn received his first yellow card of the year. The Eagles continued to apply the pressure to tie this one back up, shots were kicked from everywhere. The last 30 minutes of play would roll around, and FGCU eventually tied the game at two apiece.

FIUs Next Stop

The Panthers move to 0-2-3, still fighting to get their first win of the season. On August 30th, FIU will be back at home to face off against Howard at 1pm on ESPN+. These next five games will give the Panthers an opportunity to string together a few wins before conference play gets underway.
