The penalty was awarded after Germán Berterame took a hard blow to the back of the head from CF Montréal defender Efraín Morales. Berterame went down and appeared to lose consciousness. Players immediately signaled for the medical staff to attend to him. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance, and after the match, coach Guillermo Hoyos said in his postgame press conference that Berterame was conscious and alert at the hospital.
