FORT MYERS, FL – The Jupiter Hammerheads started to give the game away during the middle innings due to their command issues. Despite their struggles on the mound, the bats certainly did not give up. In front of 720 people, the Hammerheads would score six late runs in their 9-7 comeback victory over the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels.

Hammerheads Give Up 11 Walks
Jake Clemente made the start, and walks were not an issue early in the game. In fact, the third was the only inning in which Jupiter did not allow a walk. However, the fourth inning was where the issues began to surface.
Clemente allowed four walks in that inning, giving the Mighty Mussels a free run in the process. Fort Myers would go on to score another run to end the inning with a 2-1 lead.

Franklyn Moreta entered in the fourth, and he also struggled. Enrique Jimenez hit a huge two-run double in the fifth, putting the Mighty Mussels up 4-1.

After the Hammerheads scored a pair of runs, Moreta then gave up a two-run homer to Luis Fragoza, putting them down 7-3. Moreta threw just 24 strikes on 50 pitches. He went 2.1 innings, surrendering four hits, five runs, and three walks.
From the seventh inning onward, the bullpen became efficient for Jupiter, proving to be the turning point of the game, along with their comeback runs. The 11 walks didn’t seem to entirely define the game.
Julio Mendez tossed a scoreless seventh, recording two strikeouts. Luis Cesar improved his record to 2-0 after throwing two scoreless innings. In four games, he boasts a 1.35 ERA, .091 opponents’ batting average, and a 1.50 WHIP across 6.2 innings.
Pre-Comeback Runs
The Hammerheads didn’t let their weaknesses on one side of the diamond affect the other. Echedry Vargas was one of the more impactful players in the game. He put Jupiter up 1-0 in the second on an RBI single. Vargas went 2/4 in the game.

Jupiter Finishes with 15 Hits
Down by four in the seventh, the Hammerheads got one back. After Emilio Barreras hit a double to lead off the inning, he scored after Johnson reached first base on a throwing error. It was the beginning of three errors for the Mighty Mussels. Bareeras had a 3/5 night, raising his average to .333, which is third in the Florida State League.
In the eighth inning, the Hammerheads got to work rather quickly. Marlins prospect Andrew Salas drew a walk, and Vargas reached base with a hit. Ortega laid down a perfect bunt, and Fort Myers’ third baseman made a costly throw to first, scoring Salas. Jake McMutcheon then hit a sac fly to make it a one-run game.
Jupiter put on the perfect swan song to this ballgame in the ninth inning. The script to a Hammerheads comeback victory was in the wings, and it was beginning to unfold.
Both Johnson and Morlando singled, and then Salas put down a nice bunt on a play in which the Mighty Mussels messed up again. This time, their pitcher made a throwing error, scoring Johnson and tying the game at seven. Johnson ended the game scoring three runs on a 3/5 performance at the plate.
Afterwards, Ortega ripped a double into left field, bringing both Salas and Morlando home. It was Ortega’s sixth double of the season, and he was the game’s biggest impact. He finished going 3/4 with three RBI.
