Ft Lauderdale-Inter Miami CF’s dream of winning the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup was mashed by Nashville SC last Wednesday night. After a 0–0 draw in Nashville, the teams played to a 1–1 stalemate at Inter Miami’s home stadium, but the visitors advanced on the away-goals rule.
Lionel Messi scored his historic 900th career goal early in the match, giving fans the hope that Miami would once again eliminate Nashville from an international tournament.

The visitors found their equalizer in the 74th minute, as Cristian Espinoza’s strike sent Inter Miami crashing out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. In the wake of the unexpected early exit, Miami’s newest signings have come under scrutiny for their production to date.
Bitter disappointing loss for #InterMiamiCF ..Nashville did enough to get the result they needed & the Herons failed to capitalize on their opportunities..#Messi scored, but was held in check most of the night & his teammates didn’t shoulder the load..#MLS #CONCACAFChampionsCup https://t.co/hxypiXdhEh

New Herons
German Berterame
Germán Berterame has featured in all three of Inter Miami’s MLS matches. The Designated Player striker has yet to find the back of the net, despite getting on the end of several clear scoring opportunities.
At times, Berterame has appeared tense in front of goal, and that pressure could build the longer he goes without scoring his first for Miami. Still, his track record suggests it is only a matter of time before he breaks through. For now, however, his early performances fall short of expectations.
Dayne St Clair
Dayne St. Clair entered the season as the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, but he has yet to reach that standard with Inter Miami. The Canadian international has conceded six goals so far—though not all can be attributed to him—and has struggled to deliver standout performances.
With a 54 percent save rate, St. Clair has shown moments of inconsistency and has appeared shaky at times. Given the high expectations surrounding his arrival, his early performances have fallen short, leaving room for improvement as the season progresses.
Sergio Reguilón
Sergio Reguilón has spent much of his time with Inter Miami sidelined by injury, but he was able to start Wednesday’s crucial match against Nashville. The left back was enjoying a strong performance, even providing the assist on Lionel Messi’s lone goal of the night.
Unfortunately, the injury bug struck again, forcing Reguilón off and bringing Noah Allen into the match. While he has shown flashes of his quality at left back, his availability remains a concern. If Reguilón can stay healthy, he has the potential to be a significant boost to the Herons’ defense.
Micael
Micael has been the most consistent and reliable performer among Inter Miami’s 2026 additions. He has quickly established himself as the starting left center back, delivering steady and composed performances.
While he has not been spectacular, Micael has provided stability in defense, forming a solid partnership alongside Maximiliano Falcón at the heart of the back line.
Facundo Mura
Facundo Mura was brought in to challenge Ian Fray for the starting right back role and to provide an upgrade on the position. While he has earned the starting nod, Mura has yet to clearly separate himself.
He has been solid defensively but has offered limited impact going forward. At this stage, Mura has not established himself as an immediate upgrade, though he will continue to have opportunities to justify his role and show why he was brought into the squad.
David Ayala
David has made just one MLS start for the Herons so far. He showed steady, if unspectacular, form during the preseason, but it remains too early to fully assess his impact. A clearer picture of his contribution should emerge over the next few matches..
Final Thoughts
The new arrivals for Inter Miami have yet to soar with the team. If Inter Miami is to win any trophies this season, each and everyone opf them must boost their production dramatically for Miami. It is early in the season, but their production in the CONCACAF Champions Cup left a lot to be desired.
