Miami, Florida – Team Venezuela defied the odds, fighting off a late rally to outlast the United States 3-2, making WBC history. The Venezuelan pitching staff stifled a talented American lineup filled with big stars, holding them to three paltry hits. Brice Turang recorded the first hit at the bottom of the third. It wouldn’t be until the eighth that the US got its big swing in the form of a game-tying two-run blast from Bryce Harper, who accounted for two of the team’s hits Tuesday night. MLB rookie Nolan McLean performed admirably on the mound against the opposition’s potent lineup, working four and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, walking one, and striking out four. Eduardo Rodriguez was even better, one-hitting the Americans through four and a third, also walking one and punching out four.

Although Team USA’s pitching set a new WBC record, combining for 83 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of 80 K’s set by Team Japan in 2023, their lack of both contact hitting and slugging caught up to them. Both Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber struck out three times each, making up six of the team’s 10 combined strikeouts.
Venezuela jumped to an early 1-0 lead during the third frame. Team captain Salvador Perez led off with a single to right field. Ronald Acuña Jr. walked afterward with one out, followed by a wild pitch that moved up the runners. Maikel Garcia, the tournament MVP, took advantage, plating Perez with a sacrifice fly to center fielder Byron Buxton. The Venezuelans extended their lead further with a round-tripper in the fifth. Wilyer Abreu got a hold of McLean’s four-seam fastball and jettisoned it straight to center, making it 2-0. The Americans had their first opportunity to score in the sixth with Harper on, but Judge grounded out to Garcia at third.

The United States flipped the switch in the eighth and rallied. Bobby Witt Jr. drew the two-out walk, allowing Harper to step up to the plate. On a 1-0 count, the slugger launched it deep to center field off reliever Andres Machado, tying the game. Momentum swung right back toward Venezuela’s favor in the ninth when Eugenio Suárez doubled on a line drive to left field, finding the gap to score Javier Sanoja. Although the Venezuelans threatened to score more with two on base, Perez flied out to keep it a one-run game.
Daniel Palencia was deployed to hold back the Americans. The closer fanned Schwarber and then retired dangerous pinch-hitter Gunnar Henderson, pushing the US to the brink. Despite Roman Anthony’s best efforts, he struck out swinging. Palencia ended Team USA’s hopes, engraving Venezuela’s triumph at the WBC.

And so it ends. Team USA’s star-studded offense performed below expectations throughout the tournament, particularly in the power department. Having your three and four spot hitters go hitless in a title game is never a good thing. Although the US returned to the final, their fate was the same as in 2023. Hats off to the pitching staff; they were elite. The United States made it this far because of them. Aside from the lack of hitting, they had no flash, no real swagger. I hate to say it because I picked them to win it all, but they were boring. The loss to Italy, Cinderella team or no, was embarrassing. Sure, they stopped juggernaut and heavy tournament favorite Dominican Republic in the 2-1 victory; However, they still came up short. Of the six tournaments, the US has clinched only one.
Frustration aside, the 2026 edition of the World Baseball Classic surpassed its predecessor. The event brought people from around the world together to watch and admire the sport they love while further growing the game worldwide. Miami continued to serve as an excellent venue throughout the WBC, and we hope to see a repeat in the next one. It was an honor and a pleasure to cover the event, reporting on 13 games over 13 days. To see the passion and love from the players, coaching staff, and fans in person will be a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.
